Before we jump to analyzing Importance Of Movie Props, let’s ask few questions to ourselves.
Have you ever asked yourself why my films aren’t fabulous? What components should I pay attention more to “WOW” my audience? Why others films look so engaging, even though my stories truly provide a much deeper message with brilliant plot twists at the end?
Sounds familiar, right?
As independent filmmakers, we face a good amount of obstacles in front of our journey in making films. Surely, in most scenarios, the number one challenge is the lack of finance. Or rather it’s complete absence. With owning right budget you can deliver a right project. Let’s not state obviousness here, but analyze little deeper and further.
I watch tons of the movies. Not because of I enjoy, which I very much do, but with a purpose of studying each of them. My weekly ritual usually contains watching 2-3 classic films (black & white, films made before 90’s), 1 trip to the theater, and every day I spend 10 to 20 min watching short films made by Indie Filmmakers.
When you watch different films produced on different levels, you consciously or not start noticing the contrast between them. Something that I’ve actually had discovered for myself, the most indie films don’t put enough efforts in setting up the visual look of the film or don’t bother to use appropriate props in the scenes. Some stories are truly incredible and touching. However, if you don’t put enough recognition to the props in your scenes, it will make your audience to perceive the story, not in the way you could have hoped.
The main point here is the importance of props in indie films are often overlooked. We should keep in mind, visual objects of each film, as important as the story, characters, sound, and cinematography. Many aspiring filmmakers simply overlook this factor or they only consider placing props as something in the background. Without making them meaningful to the scene nor appropriate enough.
Let’s Make Comparisons
Your observations based on these 4 pictures? Which ones seem more appealing and engaging?
You might not know what’s really happening on each scene yet (if you do, pretend you don’t). However, the scenes from “horrible bosses” and “anger management” seem much more appealing and engaging versus the scenes from “have a nice day”. The reasons are simple. You are connecting more emotionally because the look of “horrible bosses” and “anger management” are suitably filled with props that helping to enhance the performances of each character, and making them look more conceivable.
While “have a nice day” looks too ordinary, lifeless and flat. The scene being too plain, makes it challenging for the audience to focus on the plots and build the emotional momentum. Characters can be given a prop that gives significant meaning about the character itself. In “have a nice day”, we barely can notice any object that would characterize them.
- Prop is an item utilized on screen or stage to help improve an execution. Put essentially: they’re a fundamental piece of film, TV, and theater
- The importance of props may diversify from meaning everything, to meaning nothing at all
- Props can represent characters
- Lifeless actors in films are props
- A director should break down why a specific prop is used, in what camera point it should be in, is prop is specifically identified with the character or environment
- It can make a scene feel more authentic or encourage actors to play their role more convincing
- In most movie props are there to tell the story.
So, overall, props need to add its purpose to the scenes, and it shouldn’t merely just be to fill in empty spaces or just for decoration (in some cases it’s acceptable). Bottom line, you need to consider props precisely before they are placed in a scene.
For independent filmmakers is pretty challenging to execute the same quality films as the pictures by major studios of Hollywood. Nevertheless, by putting extra efforts on placing meaningful props in your scenes, could significantly impact the quality and make your story just the way you had envisioned.
Understanding and knowing how to use movie props properly will lift the class (quality) of your film up and the final result makes you really be proud of it. Don’t compromise on your creativity, use all available resources to create what imagine.
